2009 marks the 30th anniversary of the New York Mississippi Picnic, and this year’s event will be held Saturday, June 13, from noon – 6 p.m. in the East Meadow of Central Park (5th Avenue and 97th Street) in Manhattan. The theme for the 2009 picnic is “Celebrate Mississippi,” and it will highlight some of the best of what Mississippi has to offer. Some of the state’s talented artists will be displaying and promoting their work, Mississippi authors will be available for book signings, and chefs will be on hand providing cooking demonstrations, Mississippi-style, and providing “tastes of Mississippi.”
Also, many of the state’s talented musicians will be providing live entertainment for everyone’s enjoyment. Music will be provided for this year’s picnic by:
Jasmine Murray, Mississippi’s Top 13 American Idol.
Super Chikan
The Delta Mountain Boys
Jon Paris
Have a creative streak of your own? Show it off by entering your artwork in the Amateur Art Contest! “Best Dessert” and “Best Picnic Spread” contests are also staples of the picnic, and a scavenger hunt will be held for the children.
Artists that will be on hand to sell their artwork include
Wyatt Waters, Cathy Crocket, Mandy Ellard, Kit Fields, Vicki Overstreet, Carol Cox Peaster, Elizabeth Stewart , Jennifer Stevens Nicholson and Cynthia Whitsett Vowell. Leah Overstreet will be with her photography as well.
Chefs that will be serving up a Taste of Mississippi:
Craig Fant, F&B Catering; David Groll, Executive
Chef, McAlister’s; Martha Hall Foose, and Irvin Jackson from the Mississippi Seafood Industry.
Of course, the New York Mississippi Picnic would not be complete without some good ole Mississippi farm-raised, southern-fried catfish and hushpuppies from Simmons Catfish in Yazoo City and lots of McAlister’s Deli ice cold sweet tea to wash it all down.
